The Smock mill. so named because the shape is likened to the linen smock of a countryman.
The model shows an early type with wheel & chain as the method of turning the cap.
The mill is fitted with four spring sails, the setting of which requires that the sails are not turning whilst they are individually adjusted with a lever mechanism.
The chain wheel operates a gear on the curb in order to turn the sails into the wind. An all wooden structure such as this is very prone to damage should the mill be 'tail winded' -every millers worst fear as this means the wind hitting the sails from behind which could easily rip off the sails or at worst topple the entire mill.
The boardwalk here is not only to aid turning the cap but also is a means of keeping animals away from the sweeps
